Background of the Study
In Potiskum Local Government Area (LGA), located in Yobe State, Nigeria, traditional rulers play an essential role in the governance and cultural preservation of their communities. However, the influence of geopolitical pressures has significantly impacted their operations and ability to govern effectively. Potiskum, with its rich ethnic diversity and historical ties to various regional and national political powers, has witnessed varying levels of interference in the activities of traditional rulers. These pressures, which include political conflicts, religious influences, and the socio-economic challenges facing the region, have affected the authority and autonomy of traditional institutions (Buba & Usman, 2023). This study will examine how these geopolitical pressures impact the operational roles of traditional rulers in Potiskum and the broader implications for governance in the region.
